Healthy Soil, Healthy Food

Explore how soil health supports sustainable agriculture and nutritious food systems. Through examples from Farm Hero farms, investigate regenerative farming practices and design solutions to support healthy soil and healthy food choices in your communities.

Healthy Soil, Healthy Food invites students to explore the science of soil and how it shapes the food we eat. Using real farms featured on Farm Hero, students study regenerative agriculture and see how soil health connects to their communities.

In this collection, students learn how soil works as a living system. They study plant growth and how nutrients cycle through the soil. They also examine regenerative farming methods such as cover cropping, crop rotation, composting, and reduced tillage to see how these practices restore the soil while supporting our food production.

The collection ends with the Regenerative Soil Action: Project-Based Learning challenge. In this PBL, students investigate how soil health affects food production and access to nutritious food. Students design and present a solution, such as a school garden plan or composting program, to support healthy soil and food choices in their community.
