Build a deep, working understanding of the physics of waves and their importance in our world

Explore how sound, light and other electromagnetic waves are involved in engaging real-world phenomena, like surfing in the ocean, animal communication, and mobile networks.
Through immersive, hands-on learning experiences gain:
  • Foundational content knowledge and insights into expert applications of waves
  • Critical and design thinking skills
  • Data and modeling skills
  • Experience with coding and engineering applications, including robotics

Students get inspired to learn the science of waves through real STEM role models ranging from Navy officers, like Angie Violante below, to robotics engineers and rock musicians that apply the physics of waves in their everyday work.

Mission 1

Mission 1: Welcome to Waves

Mission 1 introduces students to the basics of waves, setting the stage for deeper investigations:

  • Calculate the amount of energy in waves
  • Compare different types of waves
  • Analyze videos of waves in slow motion
  • Build models to explore waves
  • Explore how waves change in different mediums
  • Explore how waves can carry information through wave modulation
Mission 2

Mission 2: Sound and Acoustics

Mission 2 lets students explore the nature of sound and its applications in their world. Students will:

  • Model the transmission of sound through a variety of media
  • Analyze music and engineer a musical instrument to specifications
  • Study the voices of humans and other animals
  • Complete investigations of hearing and sound reception by instrumentation
  • Learn how sound is transmitted, on land and below the sea, and how these signals can be used in research and communication
Mission 3

Mission 3: Applications of Sound (Fall 2018)

Mission 3 challenges students to apply their learning through project-based activities that emulate authentic STEM work:

  • Track humpback whales as they roam the world by recording and analyzing sound data
  • Develop local “soundscapes” and share them globally
  • Build and use acoustic robots to make and gather sound
